The Angel Top

The Angel Top is a size-inclusive crochet halter top pattern inspired by Spanish romance, dramatic ruffles, and timeless handmade fashion. Designed with elegant shoulder draping and adjustable corset lacing, this intermediate crochet pattern has become one of my signature garments and a favorite among makers looking to create a statement piece they can truly customize.

The Story

In September 2019, I was getting ready to do a runway show for LA Fashion Week and had nothing to wear. It’s ironic, isn’t it? A fashion designer with nothing to wear. I needed something functional that I could work in backstage and fabulous enough to walk the runway.

I wanted something that felt like Spanish romance. The runway was being held in a beautiful Spanish-style Catholic cathedral in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles, and I wanted my outfit to match the venue. I decided to make myself a black top with a shoulder ruffle to add a flirtatious feel and cover the back corset strings.

I styled the top with high-rise black jeans, a bolero hat, and two rosaries from my late grandmothers, who would have loved that I was doing a fashion show in a Catholic church (even though they may have been shocked by some of the looks).

The Pattern

The Angel Top was the second pattern I ever released. I called my two crochet friends and go-to girls, Tessa and Brittany, to help me test it. This was back before I knew how to properly test a pattern, and thank GOD I was able to come up with a size-inclusive pattern with only two testers. I have since updated the pattern and often hear what a fun and easy make it is.

Since the release of the Angel Top it has been one of my favorite patterns to share. I love that so many women of different shapes and sizes love making wearing this top.

I named it the “Angel Top” because when it lays flat, the drape looks like two little wings for cap sleeves.

Looking back, the Angel Top reminds me of a season when I was learning to trust my instincts as a designer. What began as a practical outfit for one runway show became one of the patterns that helped shape my career. I hope every maker who creates the Angel Top feels that same confidence to wear something handmade that reflects their own creativity and style.
