The Whisper Top

Delicate like a secret, wearable like a favorite.

The origin story…

I originally designed the Whisper Top while exploring how to create my own fabrics by combining different threads. I was drawn to the idea of a thin, chainmail-like texture that was delicate but strong, so I created a small collection using fine thread held together with shimmering metallic strands. The result was an ethereal, glimmering material that elevated even the simplest silhouettes.

I wanted to design a top that I could easily wear day to day, but with that same elevated feeling. I added delicate beads to the hem of the design for a subtle sparkle. This design has been a personal go-to in my wardrobe that I kept to myself but lately, I began receiving custom orders for the design.

That’s when I knew it was time to write a pattern and share it with the world….

Designed for all skill levels

I designed the Whisper Top pattern to be easily customizable and beginner friendly, even with its beaded lace hem and hand-crafted fabric. It’s the perfect project if you’re looking to explore new techniques, like creating your own material or adding beads, while still ending up with a wearable, timeless piece.

A design with a secret…

While I was developing the pattern, I found out I was pregnant. When I filmed the first content and took the official photos, I was still in my first trimester. My bump was small enough to hide but just noticeable enough for those who knew me well to start asking questions. I wasn’t quite ready to share the news, but the secret felt sweet and sacred.

That’s how the top got its name: Whisper. It felt like a quiet little secret, something soft and delicate, like your best friend leaning over to whisper in your ear.

Even though the design looks intricate, let me tell you a little secret… you got this.

This design came to life with the help of an amazing team of testers. Some were new to my team, and their creativity and insight absolutely blew me away. Their versions of the Whisper Top are stunning, and I hope they inspire you as much as they inspired me.

Kit is one of my go-to girls for both her style and her talent. She always brings an elegance to every look and her dreamy paradise island backdrops definitely don’t hurt!

The fit of her Whisper Top is especially beautiful, with a delicate drape that really highlights the yarn and beads she used. She chose a linen cotton blend with a hint of tinsel for subtle shimmer, working with three strands held together.

For the finishing touch, she used iridescent teardrop-shaped glass beads in 6mm and 8mm sizes, placing 32 small and 24 large beads throughout the design. Her version features 8 shells and a closed back — a stunning, refined take that feels both ethereal and elegant.

Alex is an amazing maker who’s truly coming into her own as a designer. I first met her in one of my one-on-one crochet classes and was instantly drawn to her fun personality and cool sense of style. So when she applied to be on the Whisper Top Testing Team, I was thrilled — and her final look did not disappoint!

Staying true to her rock star vibes, she created a bold black and pink version of the top using 398 yards of Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton in Black paired with Clisil Sequin Yarn in Lilac for that extra sparkle. She finished it off with 70 pony beads in a mix of pearl white and iridescent black, adding just the right amount of edge and shine. The result is absolutely stunning — total rock star energy.

Jen has me so excited to be a girl mom. This mother-daughter duo is MELTING ME! How adorable is her little babe in the Whisper Top?!

Jen is incredibly talented and never ceases to amaze me with her style choices. She’s graced us as a featured maker many times, and every piece she creates is elevated and suits her beautifully.

For her own top, Jen used 301 yards of Bernat Softee Cotton in Black and added an eye- catching finish with 78 black glass beads.

Her daughter’s version is made with 290 yards of Bernat Softee Baby Cotton yarn in the color Soft Plum with 60 iridescent glass beads..

Gwen is a very talented maker and has graced us as a featured artist a few times. I first met her through my crochet club and then had the pleasure of sitting beside her at a recent meetup while she worked on her Whisper Top test! It was the first time I’ve gotten to see one of my patterns being tested in person and I loved having that moment to sit and stitch with a friend.

For her top, Gwen chose a beautiful shade of blue using Cotton Kings from Hobbii which gave the piece a lovely, smooth drape. She added a touch of shimmer with rose gold 4mm metal beads and added extra beading to the neckline, a beautiful touch if I do say so myself.

It was such a joy to see her bring this top to life!

Fiona is an Italian goddess with style for days. She is the epitome of beauty and brains and brought such thoughtful insight to the Whisper Top pattern. Honestly, I’m a little envious of her final look. I think I need one in this color ASAP!

She used approximately 400 yards of a cotton/lurex blend yarn from an Italian company called Il Banco dei Filati which specializes in yarns from industry overproduction. This is a great option for anyone shopping for yarn in Italy… which is now on my bucket list….

For her beadwork, Fiona selected hematite spheres from World of Jewel, an Italian wholesaler that ships throughout Europe. She incorporated 80 beads total, adding a cool earthy feel.

Loving this effortless yet sophisticated look.

Debbie looks absolutely lovely in her pink Whisper Top! She added her own special touch by incorporating beads into the ties, which is a lovely idea for other makers who can’t get enough sparkle.

She used 411 yards of Rico Design Fashion Cotton Métallisé DK, a sparkly pale pink yarn to create her fabric. Deb made her version to fit her measurements of a 36DD bust and 32-inch waist, and the result is both flattering and shows off her personal style.

We love seeing how each maker adds their unique flair and Deb’s soft shimmer and thoughtful accents are simply beautiful.

Shari is serving pure rock star energy in her sparkly black Whisper Top! She never fails to wow me with her incredible style. Her personality shines right through her fashion choices, and this look is no exception.

I was so thrilled to have her on the Whisper Top Testing Team, and her final look was absolutely on point from head to toe. She used 469 yards of Berroco Modern Cotton DK paired with Rozetti Yarns Cotton Gold with silver sequins to create a gorgeous sparkly fabric.

She added 84 beads for to her hem, creating a beautiful finish to her top. Shari’s version is bold, glamorous, and fit for a rad fashion queen.

I know this little top will continue to be a favorite in my wardrobe.

It’s easy to throw on, instantly elevates an outfit, and lets me say, “Thanks, I made it.”

As I step into this new chapter in my life as a new mom, I know comfort and functionality will be very important while I maintain my personal style. I’m so happy to have this sweet top in my wardrobe that is just as beautiful as it is easy to wear.

I hope you love it as much as I do!

Xoxo,

Dominique
